New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
